2024 Election

The City of Garibaldi will have the office of Mayor and two City Council positions on the ballot in the November 5, 2024, General Election. All positions are non-partisan. Terms begin January 2025. The City Council position terms are for 4 years, and the mayor term is for 2 years.

Any registered voter who has lived Garibaldi continuously at least since November 5, 2023, can run for city council! If you have never attended a council meeting, now is the time to consider how you could contribute.

To run for city office in Garibaldi, an individual must be a registered voter who has resided in the city continuously during the twelve months immediately preceding the November election day. For the general and election in 2024, the deadline to beginning continuous residency in the city was November 5, 2023. Interested and eligible residents must first submit forms to both the state and city.
How to File to Run for Office

Review Qualifications:

A person shall be eligible for an elective office of the City if at the time of election, he/she is a qualified elector within the City for twelve continuous months immediately preceding the election and remains so during the term of office to which elected.

Consult Pages 21-23 of the Candidate Manual linked below.
Complete the Candidate Filing Form (SEL101). When completing the form, please note the following:– Indicate whether you are filing for the Office of Mayor or City Councilor– All positions are nonpartisan
Complete the top portion of the Candidate Signature Sheet Nonpartisan (SEL 121). Petition ID will be issued by City Elections Official.
Bring your SEL101 and SEL121 forms to the City Elections Official at City Hall for approval before gathering signatures.
The City Elections Official will review the forms and provide written approval to circulate for signatures. Failure to receive approval before circulating will result in the rejection of the signature sheets.
Using the approved signature sheet, collect at least 7 valid signatures. It is recommended that you obtain more than the required number of signatures to make sure the petition contains a valid number of signatures. Complete signer requirements are found on page 28 of the Candidate Manual.
Return your signature sheets to the City Elections Official at City Hall in sufficient time for the Election Official to deliver the filing to the County Clerk and obtain signature verification before filing closes at 5 pm on August 27, 2024. Candidates are encouraged to submit signatures to the Elections Official by August 19, 2024, to ensure there is enough time for verification.
Once candidates are confirmed, the Elections Official will prepare a certified list to the County for the ballot.

About the Garibaldi City Council

City Council is comprised of a mayor and four councilors.

  1. All council members are elected at large.
  2. Councilor terms are four years, unless filling an unexpired term.
  3. The mayor’s term is two years, unless filling an unexpired term.
    Candidates may only run for one position per election.
  4. Council meetings are held on the third Monday of each month.
  5. Councilors may attend multiple city and regional meetings each month.
  6. Councilors must file an annual statement of economic interest with the Oregon Government Ethics Commission (OGEC).
  7. Councilors are strongly advised to obtain training from the League of Oregon Cities, or other source, and refresh that training in each new year.

Required Campaign Financing

As required by state law, candidates must follow campaign finance reporting requirements. Be sure to review the contribution and expenditure reporting requirements and observe the filing deadlines. Miscellaneous

All election forms that are filed with the city are a matter of public record and will be released if requested.
