Update 2/19: The City of Garibaldi has temporarily closed the City Hall administrative offices and Community Hall as a precautionary measure until environmental remediation work is completed.

Why was City Hall closed? Recent environmental assessments identified moisture intrusion and confirmed mold growth in limited areas of the building. While there is no emergency condition, the City chose to close the affected portions of the building out of an abundance of caution until remediation work is completed.

Is this a “toxic mold” situation?
No. There is no indication of a widespread or dangerous mold condition. The mold identified is the type commonly associated with moisture intrusion in buildings.
The City is addressing the issue proactively to ensure a safe and healthy environment for staff and the public.

Is it safe to be in the building?
There is no indication of an acute health hazard. However, because moisture and localized mold growth were confirmed in certain areas, the City is limiting access until remediation and verification are complete.
This precautionary approach helps minimize potential irritant or allergy-related exposure.

What areas are affected?
Confirmed mold growth was identified in the old jail cells at the back of City Hall, and is suspected in the interstitial space between those cells and the kitchen and bathrooms above. As a precaution, adjacent areas — including the Community Hall — have also been temporarily closed.

Are City services still available?
Yes. City staff are working remotely during remediation. Essential services remain available.
Please contact the City by phone or email, and staff will respond promptly.

What about City Council meetings?
Because the Community Hall is temporarily closed, Council meetings will be held online until further notice. Access details will continue to be posted on the City’s website and social media pages.

How long will the closure last?
The duration depends on remediation timelines and follow-up verification testing. The City will reopen the building once corrective work is complete and the space is confirmed ready for occupancy.

Will updates be provided?
Yes. The City will share updates as remediation progresses and once reopening plans are finalized.
